South Korea’s National Assembly approved President Lee Jae-myung’s choice of Kim Min-seok as prime minister on 3 July, endorsing the four-term Democratic Party lawmaker by 173 votes to three, with three invalid ballots. The conservative People Power Party boycotted the session, leaving 179 legislators in the chamber.
Lee countersigned the appointment less than three hours later, installing the 61-year-old as the nation’s 49th prime minister and the first of the new administration. Kim, a long-time confidant of the president, said he would uphold the public will "as if it were heaven" and pledged to focus on stabilising the economy.
The confirmation ends a month-long vacancy that began when Lee nominated Kim on 4 June. Lawmakers are still due to deliberate on other cabinet picks announced in late June, including veteran bureaucrat Koo Yoon-cheol for finance minister and former Chungnam National University president Lee Jin-sook for education minister.
