Simion Leads Romanian Vote With 41%; PM Ciolacu Resigns, Predoiu Named Interim

Hard-right nationalist George Simion of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians secured roughly 41% of ballots in Romania’s 5 May presidential election rerun, according to near-final figures from the Central Electoral Bureau. Independent Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan followed with about 21%, while coalition-backed candidate Crin Antonescu trailed on around 20%. Turnout was put at 52.6%. Because no contender won an outright majority, Simion and Dan will face each other in a run-off on 18 May. The election was rerun after last year’s vote was annulled amid allegations of foreign interference. Simion, 38, campaigns on an agenda of nationalism, Euroscepticism and opposition to military aid for Ukraine, positioning himself as an ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Dan, a pro-European reformer with an anti-corruption profile, is seeking to rally centrist and liberal voters before the second round. The governing coalition’s setback triggered the resignation of pro-EU Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on 5 May after his candidate failed to reach the run-off. Interim President Ilie Bolojan has appointed Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu as caretaker premier, ushering in a transitional administration that will steer the country until after the presidential contest and the formation of a new governing majority.
