Reports Say Russian Black Sea Fleet Vice Admiral Killed in Crimea

Unverified reports circulating on Russian military-aligned blogs and cited by Ukrainian commentators claim that Vice Admiral Ildar Akhmerov, a senior commander in Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, was killed in Russian-occupied Crimea. The information has not been confirmed by either Russia’s Ministry of Defence or Ukraine’s government.

If corroborated, Akhmerov would be the second top officer from the Black Sea Fleet reported killed since September 2023, when Ukraine said a missile strike in Sevastopol fatally wounded then-commander Admiral Viktor Sokolov. The fleet, headquartered in Crimea, has repeatedly been targeted by Ukrainian strikes since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.

Separately, eyewitness accounts described multiple explosions in central Moscow around the same time as the new casualty claims, with at least two vehicles set ablaze. Russian authorities have not commented on the cause of the blasts or whether they are connected to the reports from Crimea.
