Russian forces have made significant territorial gains in the Kursk region over the past five days, breaking through Ukrainian defensive lines and reclaiming areas that had been under Ukrainian control since August 6, 2024. The advance has been particularly notable in the town of Sudzha, where Russian troops have reached the center, indicating a potential collapse of Ukrainian positions in the area. Over 1,100 square kilometers of territory have been liberated, reclaiming more than 86% of the area previously occupied by Ukrainian forces, including the recapture of five settlements: 1st Knyazhiy, 2nd Knyazhiy, Zamostye, Mirny, and Kazachya Loknya.
President Vladimir Putin visited the Kursk region for the first time since the Ukrainian incursion began, meeting with military leaders at a command post. During the visit, Putin emphasized the need for a swift and complete defeat of Ukrainian forces in the region, stating that the task is to 'defeat the enemy entrenched here in our Kursk region in the shortest possible time.' He also suggested the creation of a buffer zone along the Russian border to fully liberate Kursk. Putin's visit comes as Russian troops focus on clearing the remaining Ukrainian-held areas.
Ukrainian forces are facing significant challenges, with reports indicating that they are retreating from the Kursk region. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi acknowledged the ongoing battles, particularly in the suburbs of Sudzha, and stated that his priority remains the preservation of Ukrainian soldiers' lives, suggesting that troops are maneuvering to more advantageous positions. The conflict has seen 800 Russian soldiers travel 15 km through a gas pipeline for four days to surprise Ukrainian troops, contributing to the operation's success.
The conflict in Kursk has resulted in substantial casualties and equipment losses on both sides. Ukrainian forces have reported nearly 55,000 Russian casualties, including over 22,200 killed, 31,800 wounded, and 942 captured. Additionally, over 2,100 pieces of Russian equipment have been destroyed, according to Ukrainian sources. Russian forces have reported 67,000 Ukrainian losses and 7,000 pieces of equipment destroyed, including 391 tanks, 2,780 armored fighting vehicles, and 1,000 artillery pieces. A Russian attack with a FAB-3000 bomb on an agricultural facility in Cherkasy Porechne, which housed ammonium nitrate, has been noted.
The situation in Kursk is part of a broader military strategy, with Russian forces also advancing into the Sumy region. Ukrainian troops are under pressure from both Russian and North Korean forces, with the latter assisting in the offensive. The Russian military has captured 430 Ukrainian soldiers in the region, and Putin has stated that these prisoners will be treated as terrorists. The conflict has seen the liberation of 49 settlements and 1,268 km2 of territory since the start of the Ukrainian incursion.
