Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a 72-hour ceasefire in Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, effective from midnight on May 8 through May 11. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the ceasefire proposal remains in effect despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's rejection of the initiative.

The ceasefire coincides with Victory Day celebrations, which will see leaders from around 30 countries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, attending events in Moscow.
