Portugal and Czech Close Tehran Embassies; Switzerland Reopens After Two Weeks

Portugal on 17 June closed its embassy in Tehran and evacuated remaining staff, citing the “gravity of the current situation” as Israeli air strikes and Iranian missile launches continued. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said the shutdown was temporary and followed the repatriation that day of seven Portuguese nationals, part of a broader effort to remove citizens from conflict zones in the Middle East.

The Czech Republic followed on 19 June, announcing the temporary closure of its Tehran mission for security reasons linked to the same hostilities. Prague did not specify when operations might resume, saying only that the step was precautionary amid heightened regional risk.

Switzerland, which also represents U.S. interests in Iran, reopened its embassy on 6 July after a two-week suspension that began on 20 June. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said Ambassador Nadine Olivieri Lozano and a small team re-entered Iran overland from Azerbaijan and will restore services gradually.
