Peru Approves 122% Pay Rise for President Boluarte Amid 2% Approval

Peru’s Council of Ministers has approved a decree raising President Dina Boluarte’s monthly salary by about 122 percent to 35,568 soles, or roughly US$10,000. The change, announced on 2 July, more than doubles the previous 16,000-soles pay level that had been in place since 2006.

Economy Minister Raúl Pérez Reyes said the adjustment aims to bring the presidential remuneration into line with the average earned by leaders in 12 Latin American countries. He noted that, before the increase, Peru’s head of state ranked second-to-last in that regional comparison.

The decision has triggered sharp criticism because Boluarte’s public approval has fallen to between 2 percent and 3 percent, according to May–June surveys by Ipsos and Datum. At 35,568 soles, the president will now earn almost 35 times the national monthly minimum wage of 1,025 soles, a disparity opponents say underscores the administration’s disconnect from voters facing persistently high crime and poverty.

Boluarte, 63, took office in December 2022 after the ouster of Pedro Castillo and is under separate investigations into undeclared luxury gifts and an unreported medical absence. The pay rise adds to the political pressure on her minority government as it enters the final year of its term.
