Nissan Motor Co. has decided to abandon its plan to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The company had signed agreements with Fukuoka Prefecture and Kitakyushu City in January 2025 to construct the plant in Wakamatsu Ward on a 150,000-square-meter site, with an expected investment of approximately ¥153.3 billion (about $1.1 billion).

Nissan President Ivan Espinosa communicated the decision to Fukuoka Governor Seitaro Hattori and Kitakyushu Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi on May 9, 2025, explaining that the company decided to withdraw after carefully considering the return on investment and the need to focus resources on restructuring and recovery efforts. Espinosa also apologized for the decision, which was made in late April, noting the short period since the original agreement.

Nissan stated that it will continue to develop its EV battery strategy in line with market needs.
