Murilo Huff, father of Léo, the five-year-old son he had with late singer Marília Mendonça (1995-2021), has filed a legal petition seeking unilateral custody of the child. Until recently, custody had been shared with Dona Ruth Moreira, Marília Mendonça's mother, who had been caring for Léo. Huff stated that his request to obtain full custody is motivated by his desire to be more involved in his son's upbringing and cited undisclosed "serious situations" as reasons for the change. He also denied allegations from Dona Ruth that he failed to pay child support, providing details of expenses exceeding R$15,000 (Brazilian reais) related to Léo's schooling, healthcare, recreational activities, and diabetes treatment.
Dona Ruth, in turn, accused Huff of neglect and not paying child support, and expressed emotional distress over losing custody, describing the situation as "cruel" for the child and family. The dispute has sparked family tensions, with public statements from Marília Mendonça's brother, João Gustavo, who defended their mother and appealed for an end to online attacks. The legal battle also involves concerns over the management and protection of Léo's inheritance, reportedly valued at around R$500 million, left by Marília Mendonça. In a court hearing on June 30, 2025, the judge granted Murilo Huff provisional custody of Léo, with the child moving to live in Huff's home. Both parties declined to reach an amicable agreement during the two-hour hearing. Dona Ruth's lawyer criticized the decision, while Huff's team emphasized that the ruling was based on compelling evidence presented in court. The custody dispute has drawn public attention and commentary from figures in the Brazilian music industry, including singer Roberta Miranda, who advised Huff not to humiliate himself amid the conflict. The situation remains ongoing, with both parties continuing their legal and public exchanges regarding the care and guardianship of Léo.
