Mexican Prosecutors Find 20 Bodies Near Culiacán Amid Cartel Feud

Mexican authorities found 20 bodies early Monday along the Mexico 15 highway north of Culiacán, the capital of Sinaloa state, in one of the deadliest mass killings in the region in recent years, the state prosecutor’s office said.

Four of the victims were decapitated and hung by their feet from a bridge, while 16 others—including another decapitated body—were crammed into an abandoned white van parked a few metres away. Investigators also recovered a bag containing five human heads. All of the dead were men and bore gunshot wounds.

A banner and graffiti on the vehicle carried messages apparently directed at Iván Archivaldo and Alfredo Guzmán, sons of jailed drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and leaders of a Sinaloa Cartel faction known as the Chapitos. Prosecutors are examining whether the killings are part of the escalating dispute between the Chapitos and the rival Mayos faction loyal to Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

The internal cartel conflict has claimed more than 1,200 lives across Sinaloa since mid-2024, official data show. Authorities are working to identify the victims and have increased security patrols on the corridor linking Culiacán with the northern city of Los Mochis.
