Maharashtra Reduces Ladki Bahin Yojana Payout to ₹500 for 8 Lakh Women Receiving NSMN Benefits

The Maharashtra government has reduced the monthly payout under the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana for nearly 8 lakh women beneficiaries from ₹1,500 to ₹500. This adjustment applies to women who are also receiving ₹1,000 per month under the Namo Shetkari Mahasamman Nidhi (NSMN) scheme, as the Ladki Bahin scheme imposes a maximum combined benefit cap of ₹1,500 per month. State Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare stated that the difference of ₹500 is being paid to 7,74,148 women who receive ₹1,000 per month from the NSMN scheme, in accordance with the scheme's guidelines. She clarified that no eligible woman has been excluded from the Ladki Bahin scheme and that no changes have been made to the implementation process since July 3, 2024. The move has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, including Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal and Nana Patole, who allege that the BJP-led Mahayuti government used the scheme to gain votes before the elections and is now reducing benefits. The opposition has also highlighted that the government had promised a ₹2,100 monthly payout before the elections. Eligibility for the Ladki Bahin scheme requires beneficiaries to be women aged 18-65, residents of Maharashtra, with a family income below ₹2.5 lakh per annum. Women owning a four-wheeler or with a family member in a government job are excluded. The number of active beneficiaries has dropped from 2.63 crore to 2.46 crore following a post-election review and re-evaluation of eligibility.
