Israeli Strike on Gaza Beach Café Kills at Least 30, Journalist Among Dead

An Israeli airstrike on 30 June struck the Al-Baqa Café, one of the few beachfront venues still operating in Gaza City, killing at least 30 people and injuring roughly 50, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency and hospital officials. The café, popular with students, families and journalists because it offered electricity and internet access amid widespread outages, was crowded at the time of the attack.

Palestinian photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab was among the dead, raising the number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023 to 228, local media offices said. Prominent journalist Bayan Abu Sultan was treated for shrapnel wounds. Eyewitness footage showed rescue teams pulling bodies from the rubble as smoke rose over the shoreline.

The Israeli military said it is "reviewing" reports of the incident. The strike came during a broader escalation that, according to health officials, left more than 60 Palestinians dead across the territory the same day, intensifying international calls for a cease-fire.
