Israeli Strike on Gaza Beach Café Kills 20; Journalist Among Dead

An Israeli airstrike hit the Al-Baqa Café on Gaza City’s western beachfront on Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring dozens more, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and rescue services. Medical sources quoted by Wafa news agency and several international outlets later put the death toll as high as 33, with about 50 wounded, many in critical condition.

Among the dead was Palestinian photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab, whose death brings the number of media workers killed in Gaza since October 2023 to roughly 228, according to the territory’s government media office. Prominent journalist Bayan Abu Sultan was wounded in the same strike.

The open-air café, one of the few sites still providing internet access and electricity, was popular with students, journalists and displaced residents seeking respite from months of fighting. Eyewitnesses described a single missile that left a large crater and scattered bodies across the sand.

The Israeli military said it is reviewing reports of the incident. The strike came the same day Israel expanded evacuation orders for several northern Gaza neighborhoods and intensified bombardment across Gaza City and Jabalia. Human-rights groups renewed calls for a cease-fire, warning that civilians trying to access essential services and information have few remaining safe spaces in the enclave.
