Israeli Opposition, Hostage Families Press Netanyahu for Gaza Ceasefire

Israel’s domestic debate over the Gaza war intensified after the 24 June cease-fire with Iran. Opposition leader Yair Lapid, joined by former general Yair Golan, said the eight-month campaign in Gaza had “reached a dead end” and urged the government to prioritise a truce and the return of captives held by Hamas.

Public pressure quickly followed. Tens of thousands demonstrated in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and other cities on 28–29 June, demanding a deal to release the remaining hostages. Of the 251 people abducted on 7 October 2023, the army says 49 are still in Gaza and 27 of them are presumed dead. Gaza’s civil-defence agency reported 73 Palestinian fatalities on 4 July as Israeli operations continued.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting the hard-hit kibbutz Nir Oz on 3 July, said only about 20 of the captives are believed alive but promised to “bring them all home.” His pledge comes ahead of talks in Washington on a U.S. proposal for a 60-day cease-fire that would include hostage releases. Hamas replied to the plan “in a positive spirit,” while Israeli hostage families rejected any partial exchange and called on the cabinet to accept a comprehensive agreement and end the war.
