Israel Says Gaza Airstrike Kills Hamas Founder Behind Oct. 7 Attack

Israel said its forces have killed Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, a founding member of Hamas’s military wing and a chief planner of the 7 October 2023 attacks, in an overnight airstrike in Gaza City. The Israel Defense Forces announced the death on Saturday, describing Al-Issa as one of the last senior Hamas commanders still operating inside the enclave.

The strike, carried out on Friday in the Sabra neighbourhood in coordination with the Israel Security Agency, targeted Al-Issa’s residence. The 57-year-old headed Hamas’s Combat Support Headquarters, oversaw force-build-up and training, and directed the group’s aerial and naval operations, the IDF said. Military officials called him a key source of operational knowledge who had recently been working to rebuild the group’s damaged command structure.

Al-Issa’s killing is the latest in a series of targeted operations aimed at weakening Hamas’s leadership as fighting in Gaza continues. Israel blames Hamas for the October 7 assault, which left more than 1,000 Israelis dead and about 251 taken hostage; of those hostages, 148 have since been released while roughly 50 remain unaccounted for. The IDF said it will continue to pursue commanders linked to the attack.
