Iran Relocates Evin Prisoners After Israeli Strike Kills Dozens

Iran’s prison authority said it has emptied Tehran’s Evin Prison and dispersed all inmates to other detention centres across the capital’s province after the facility was struck by Israeli missiles on 23 June. The transfer, carried out overnight, is meant to allow repairs to the damaged compound, the judiciary-run Mizan news agency reported.

Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir told state television the strike left at least 71 people dead and caused injuries among guards, visitors and detainees. French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, held since 2022, were not harmed, according to France’s foreign ministry.

Many of the roughly 2,000 prisoners formerly held at Evin—including political activists, lawyers and dual-nationals—were moved to the women’s Qarchak Prison and the Great Tehran Penitentiary, facilities already criticised for overcrowding and poor sanitation. Rights advocates say communication with families has been cut and describe reports of beatings during the relocation.

The strike on Evin, long a symbol of the Islamic Republic’s repression of dissent, came amid Israel’s weeks-long air campaign aimed at Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure. Activists warn the security breach could prompt Tehran to intensify its crackdown and accelerate pending capital cases against political prisoners.
