Iran Ends IAEA Cooperation, Citing Grossi’s ‘Double Standards’

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian told French President Emmanuel Macron that Tehran has suspended all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, arguing that the UN watchdog and its director, Rafael Grossi, have applied “double standards” and relied on Israeli intelligence even though Israel is not party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Pezeshkian said the Iranian parliament’s recent vote to halt collaboration was a “natural response” to what he described as the agency’s “destructive” conduct and its failure to condemn the 21 June US-Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The president warned that, under current circumstances, Iran cannot guarantee the safety of IAEA inspectors and questioned whether its sites would be attacked again if cooperation resumed. He insisted the agency must “respect the rights of member states” before any engagement can restart.

Tensions escalated further after the hard-line Kayhan newspaper, close to Iran’s supreme leader, called for Grossi’s arrest and execution. France, Germany and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on 30 June condemning threats against the IAEA chief and urging Tehran to restore full cooperation and ensure inspector security. Grossi said his priority remains getting inspectors back into Iranian facilities as soon as possible.
