Indonesian Rescuers Recover Body of Brazilian Hiker on Mount Rinjani

Indonesian rescue authorities have recovered the body of Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, 26, five days after she slipped from a ridge on Mount Rinjani, a 3,726-metre active volcano on the island of Lombok. Marins was trekking with five friends at dawn on 21 June when she lost her footing and plunged an estimated 600 metres down a steep cliff.

Heavy fog, rain and the mountain’s near-vertical walls repeatedly forced rescuers to suspend attempts to reach her. Roughly 48 members of Indonesia’s search-and-rescue agency Basarnas, supported by volunteer mountaineers, located the hiker on 24 June but were unable to find vital signs. A six-hour rope-and-pulley operation the following day finally brought the body up to the trail and down to a base camp for transfer to a hospital in Mataram.

A forensic examination released on 27 June in Bali concluded that Marins died within about 20 minutes of the fall from severe chest trauma and massive internal bleeding, contradicting early hopes that she might have survived for days awaiting help. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry said it had coordinated with Indonesian officials throughout the search and is assisting relatives with the return of the remains to Rio de Janeiro.

The accident is the latest in a series of fatal falls on Mount Rinjani, a popular but technically demanding climb that local authorities have since closed while they review safety protocols.
