India Presses Mali for Safe Release of Three Nationals Kidnapped in Kayes

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said three Indian nationals were abducted on 1 July from the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, western Mali, after a group of heavily armed assailants stormed the premises. The incident coincided with a wave of militant assaults across the country.
In a statement on 2 July, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the kidnapping as a “deplorable act of violence” and called on the Malian authorities to secure the workers’ “safe and expeditious” release. The Indian embassy in Bamako is coordinating with local law-enforcement agencies, factory management and the hostages’ families, while senior officials in New Delhi monitor the situation.
Al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin claimed responsibility for the broader attacks in Mali on the same day, though no group has yet taken credit for the abductions. New Delhi has advised the roughly 4,000 Indians believed to be in Mali to exercise heightened caution and remain in close contact with the embassy.
