India Delays Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight to Early 2027, Sets Uncrewed Test for 2025

India’s first crewed space mission, Gaganyaan, will now target lift-off in the first quarter of 2027, according to a media briefing by Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan and Union Minister of State for Space Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi. The revised date pushes the programme almost five years beyond its original timeline as engineers refine critical crew-safety and life-support systems.

ISRO outlined an updated flight sequence that includes an uncrewed orbital test later this year and a Test Vehicle-D2 abort demonstration in 2025, building on last year’s successful TV-D1 escape test. The eventual mission will carry a three-member Indian crew to a 400-kilometre low-Earth orbit for about three days before splash-down in the Indian Ocean.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in a recorded address to the Global Conference on Space Exploration, said an Indian astronaut will visit the International Space Station in the coming weeks under a joint ISRO-NASA effort. Modi added that India now hosts more than 250 space start-ups and reiterated plans to establish an indigenous Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035.

Despite repeated delays, Gaganyaan remains central to India’s ambitions to become the fourth nation capable of independent human spaceflight, after the US, Russia and China. Officials said astronaut training is largely complete and hardware is nearing readiness, positioning the country for an expanded human-spaceflight programme once the 2027 mission is accomplished.
