India Confirms Strikes in Pakistan; Islamabad Says Five Indian Jets Downed, Soldiers Captured

India on 6 May said it had carried out missile strikes on targets inside Pakistan, including areas of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Indian and international media reports said the operation was retaliation for a recent militant attack that killed tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Pakistani officials said the missiles struck Muzaffarabad, Kotli and Bahawalpur.

Pakistan’s military spokesman declared that the country would deliver a “comprehensive and decisive” response. He later told Reuters that Pakistani forces had shot down two Indian aircraft and an unmanned drone. Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif subsequently told Bloomberg TV that five Indian fighter jets—three Dassault Rafales, one Su-30MKI and one MiG-29—had been downed and that several Indian soldiers were taken prisoner. The claims have not been independently verified, and New Delhi has yet to comment.

The Pakistani military also reported exchanges of fire with Indian troops at multiple points along the Line of Control in Kashmir and said no Pakistani aircraft had been lost. CGTN, citing local officials, reported that the Indian strikes left at least eight people dead and 35 injured on Pakistani territory.

The confrontation marks the most serious escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours since their 2019 aerial clash, heightening regional security concerns. Diplomatic observers have urged both sides to exercise restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
