Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) baron Emiliano García-Page urged Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Saturday to face a parliamentary vote of confidence or call early general elections, arguing that the anti-corruption measures approved by the party’s Comité Federal are "insufficient" to restore public trust.

García-Page’s intervention at the closed-door meeting triggered an immediate backlash from senior ministers. Transport Minister Óscar Puente labelled the Castilla-La Mancha leader “hypocritical” and challenged him to reveal any corruption cases he claims to know. Government spokesperson Pilar Alegría and Territorial Policy Minister Ángel Víctor Torres also criticised Page, insisting internal debates remain “behind closed doors” and inviting him to contest the party leadership if he disagrees with Sánchez’s course.

The confrontation comes as Sánchez seeks to quell discontent following recent graft scandals involving former organisational chiefs. While the prime minister outlined a package of 13 transparency measures, García-Page warned that only a confidence vote in Congress—or failing that, snap elections—can demonstrate the executive still commands a majority.
