G7 Backs Israel’s Self-Defense, Says Iran Must Never Obtain Nuclear Arms

Leaders of the Group of Seven industrialised nations issued a joint communiqué from their summit in Kananaskis, Canada, affirming that Israel “has a right to defend itself” and declaring that Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon.” The statement labels Tehran the principal source of regional instability and urges all sides to “swiftly de-escalate hostilities,” including moves toward a cease-fire in Gaza.

The G7 said it would remain vigilant over energy-market risks from the conflict and stood ready to coordinate with other producers and consumers to safeguard supply. It also underscored the importance of protecting civilians as fighting between Israel and Iran intensifies.

The communiqué follows Israel’s 13 June air strikes on Iran, which Tehran says have killed more than 220 people, mostly civilians; Israeli officials put their own civilian death toll at 24 after Iranian missile attacks. The escalating conflict prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to leave the summit a day early for consultations in Washington.

U.S. officials had earlier indicated Trump might withhold his signature, but several delegations said all seven leaders ultimately backed the text. The White House has not provided further details on the president’s position.
