Foxconn Pulls Chinese Engineers From India, Jeopardising Apple’s iPhone Diversification

Foxconn Technology Group has instructed more than 300 Chinese engineers and technicians to leave its iPhone assembly facilities in southern India, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. The withdrawals, which began roughly two months ago, cover the bulk of Foxconn’s Chinese workforce in the country and come as the company and Apple prepare to start mass production of the iPhone 17.

The Taiwanese assembler relied on experienced Chinese staff to train local employees and fine-tune production lines. Their sudden exit is expected to slow line efficiency and hinder the transfer of know-how, although product quality is not thought to be at immediate risk. Apple declined to comment and Foxconn did not respond to requests for comment.

Beijing has recently urged local authorities to tighten controls on the export of technology, equipment and skilled labour, complicating Apple’s effort to diversify manufacturing away from China. India, which began large-scale iPhone assembly only four years ago, now accounts for about one-fifth of global output and is central to Apple’s plan to make most US-bound iPhones in the country by 2026. Foxconn is investing US$1.5 billion in a new plant in Tamil Nadu to support that goal, but the recall underscores the geopolitical headwinds facing the shift.
