Explosion at Zhytomyr Warehouse Kills Two, Shuts Kyiv Highway

A powerful explosion struck the Zhytomyr region of central Ukraine on 2 July, killing at least two people and injuring 15, Ukraine’s National Police said. The blast sent a column of black smoke into the sky and prompted a large emergency response.

Local officials, including Serhiy Sokalsky, head of the Hlubochytska community, said the detonation occurred at a warehouse belonging to an industrial facility near the village of Berezyna, close to the M-06 highway that links Zhytomyr with Kyiv. Two production sites were reportedly destroyed, nearby homes and vehicles caught fire, and the highway was closed to traffic.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been established, and authorities have not linked the incident to a missile or drone strike. Firefighters remained on the scene late Wednesday, working to extinguish residual flames while investigators assessed structural damage and gathered evidence.
