The European Parliament has voted to maintain the freeze on Turkey's EU accession process, citing ongoing democratic backsliding in the country. Despite the block on accession talks, the European Parliament acknowledged Turkey's strategic importance to the EU, particularly in areas such as security, trade, and migration. The 2016 EU-Turkey declaration on migration has resulted in a 33% decrease in irregular arrivals from Turkey to the EU this year. The Parliament suggested maintaining hope for future membership, distinguishing between the current government and Turkish civil society, while noting that Turkey's alignment with the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy has dropped to 5% by 2024.
