El Chapo’s Son Ovidio Guzmán Set for Guilty Plea in Chicago

Ovidio Guzmán López, son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, intends to plead guilty to U.S. narcotrafficking charges, according to a document he signed on 30 June. The filing asks that all proceedings be transferred to the federal court in Chicago, where he is being held, and waives his right to a trial in New York. A change-of-plea hearing is scheduled for 9 July in the Northern District of Illinois.

In response, prosecutors in the Southern District of New York formally withdrew their separate indictment, consolidating the case in Illinois under Rule 20 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure. Guzmán faces five counts that include conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, money-laundering conspiracy, operating a continuing criminal enterprise, and firearms violations—charges that together could carry a life sentence.

The planned plea deal would avert a lengthy trial and could lead to Guzmán’s cooperation with U.S. authorities in broader investigations into the Sinaloa Cartel’s fentanyl pipeline. Guzmán was arrested in Mexico in January 2023, extradited to the United States eight months later and identified by prosecutors as a key figure in the cartel faction known as “Los Chapitos.”
