Ecuador Recaptures Most-Wanted ‘Fito’, Eyes Fast US Extradition

Ecuadorian police and soldiers on 25 June recaptured the country’s most-wanted fugitive, gang boss José Adolfo Macías Villamar, better known as “Fito.” President Daniel Noboa said the 45-year-old leader of the Los Choneros cartel was seized without resistance after a 10-hour raid on a mansion in Montecristi, near the coastal city of Manta. Macías was found hiding in an underground bunker and immediately flown to Guayaquil.

Fito had been at large since escaping from Guayaquil’s Regional prison in January 2024, an event that triggered nationwide prison riots and coordinated attacks by criminal groups. Quito offered a US$1 million reward for information on his whereabouts and declared a state of “internal armed conflict,” deploying the military against gangs blamed for record homicide levels.

After Wednesday’s capture the gang leader was transferred to the maximum-security La Roca facility, where he is again serving a 34-year sentence for murder, drug trafficking and organised crime. A US federal grand jury in New York indicted him in April on seven counts tied to shipping cocaine to the United States in concert with Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel.

Noboa said Ecuador has already initiated proceedings to extradite Macías to the United States “as soon as possible,” although legal specialists caution the process could still stretch for months. Washington welcomed the arrest, while Ecuador’s defence ministry placed troops and police on alert for potential reprisals by Los Choneros or allied gangs, underscoring the enduring security challenge facing the Andean nation.
