The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Friday that it is terminating Temporary Protected Status for Haiti, a decision that will strip deportation relief and work permits from roughly 520,000 Haitian nationals living in the United States. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem determined that "conditions in Haiti have improved enough" for citizens to return and stated that continuing the program is "no longer compatible with U.S. national interests."

Under the order, Haiti’s TPS designation will expire on Aug. 3 and the protections will formally end on Sept. 2. Beneficiaries are being encouraged to obtain another legal status or depart voluntarily, a process DHS says can be coordinated through the CBP Home mobile application. After Sept. 2, those who remain without another immigration benefit will again be subject to deportation.

TPS is a humanitarian program created by Congress in 1990 for people whose home countries face armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary conditions. The Biden administration last year extended Haiti’s designation through February 2026, but Noem in February shortened the window to August 2025 before deciding this week to cancel the protection entirely. The move follows the administration’s earlier actions to revoke TPS for Venezuelans and other nationalities as part of a broader immigration crackdown.

Advocates contend that Haiti remains unstable—gangs control large parts of Port-au-Prince and the U.S. State Department continues to advise Americans against traveling there—raising the likelihood of legal challenges to the DHS decision. Noem has given no detailed explanation of how conditions have improved, and immigrant-rights groups say returning Haitians now could expose them to violence and economic hardship.
