Colombia’s Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia Resigns over Passport Contract Clash

Colombia’s foreign minister, Laura Sarabia, tendered her resignation on 3 July, informing President Gustavo Petro that recent government decisions “cannot be accompanied” and that her departure follows a “deep reflection.”

Sarabia’s exit comes amid an open dispute over how the country will issue its passports. She had publicly backed an 11-month extension of the existing contract with Thomas Greg & Sons, while the presidential office moved instead to shift production to Portugal, effectively overruling her position.

In her letter, the minister cited differences of principle and stressed the need for “coherence” and “institutional respect.” She thanked Petro for the opportunity to serve and wished him success as his administration enters its final stage.

Sarabia was sworn in on 29 January 2025 after having served as Petro’s chief of staff and in other senior roles. The government has not yet announced who will take over the foreign ministry.
