Brazil to Refund R$292 Million to 9 Million INSS Beneficiaries by Early June

Brazil’s federal government has unveiled a plan to reimburse roughly nine million retirees and pensioners who were hit with unauthorized payroll deductions from their National Social Security Institute (INSS) benefits dating back to March 2020. Beginning 13 May, the INSS will send alerts through its “Meu INSS” mobile application detailing each beneficiary’s losses and offering channels to confirm or contest the amounts and report additional fraud. The institution said it will return about R$292.7 million—equivalent to the deductions still withheld in April—even after a suspension order, with payments scheduled between 26 May and 6 June. The Attorney-General’s Office has asked a court to freeze R$2.5 billion in assets belonging to 12 associations under investigation so the seized funds can be used to finance further reimbursements.
