Former U.S. President Joe Biden, in one of his longest public appearances since leaving office, told an audience at the Society for Human Resource Management conference in San Diego on 2 July that he continues to receive calls from “a number of European leaders” who want him to “get engaged” in global affairs. Biden said he is not formally involved in diplomacy but is offering private advice when asked.
Biden also lamented the pace at which policies from his 2021-25 term are being reversed. Citing NATO, he said many of the achievements he “worked so damn hard” to secure are “changing so rapidly” under President Donald Trump’s administration. The 82-year-old added that he is writing a 500-page memoir, which his publisher hopes to release by March.
The address was Biden’s most extensive since disclosing an aggressive prostate cancer diagnosis in May. While supporters see the outreach from foreign capitals as evidence of lingering influence, conservative critics have questioned the credibility of his claim that European leaders routinely seek his counsel.
