AP Says U.S. Contractors Fired Live Rounds at Gaza Aid Seekers

American security contractors guarding U.S.–funded food-distribution points in Gaza have repeatedly used live ammunition against crowds of Palestinians seeking aid, according to an investigation by the Associated Press. The news agency said it obtained video from one site and interviewed two U.S. contractors who described what they called dangerous and irresponsible conduct by their colleagues.

The two contractors told AP they had filed formal complaints after witnessing guards fire in all directions—sometimes toward people waiting for assistance—and regularly deploy stun grenades and pepper spray. The men said the security staff appeared to have “a free license to do whatever they want” at the facilities.

The disclosures add to mounting concerns over the safety of civilians in Gaza’s humanitarian corridors as shortages of food, water and medical supplies persist amid the ongoing conflict.
