31-Year-Old Ukrainian Activist Demyan Ganul Assassinated in Odesa by Assailant in Military Uniform

Demyan Ganul, a 31-year-old Ukrainian activist and founder of the Street Front NGO, was assassinated in central Odesa on Aleksandrovsky Avenue. Known for his involvement in the 2014 Odessa Trade Union House fire and his assistance to the Territorial Recruitment Center (TCC) in conscripting men for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ganul was shot by an unknown assailant in military uniform around 10:30 AM on March 14. The assailant fired two shots and managed to escape the scene. The police and forensic experts are actively investigating the case, with Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announcing the deployment of a top investigative team to Odesa to identify and arrest the shooter. Ganul was a prominent figure in Ukraine, having participated in the EuroMaidan Revolution and the May 2 clashes against pro-Russian forces in Odesa. He was also involved in supporting Ukraine through rallies, charity fundraisers for the military, and campaigns to dismantle Soviet and imperial monuments. Prior to his death, Ganul had reported receiving threats against his life, including a $10,000 bounty offered by Russian sources.
