D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson has released a budget proposal that includes several tax increases and additional spending. The proposal aims to address the District's $700 million budget gap by reversing some of the significant cuts suggested by Mayor Muriel Bowser. Mendelson's plan includes raising the sales tax from 6% to 7%, increasing the payroll tax from 0.26% to 0.75%, and introducing a new $420 per child tax credit. Additionally, the property tax for properties valued over $2.5 million would increase from $0.85 to $1.00. The proposal also adds $40 million to Bowser's multi-billion-dollar budget and includes $500 million in new spending. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) would be held at 85% of the federal level, and there would be no extra 80¢ hotel tax. The D.C. Council held its first vote on the budget on May 29, with further votes scheduled for June 12.
