Lawmakers are calling on the Biden administration to increase oversight of AI and algorithmic tools used in Medicare Advantage plans. This follows a STAT investigation that highlighted issues with AI being used to deny care. A bipartisan group, including Rep. Judy Chu, Rep. Jerry Nadler, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, led a letter with 45 House Members and 4 Senators on Tuesday urging the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to scrutinize these tools more closely. The lawmakers argue that CMS has a responsibility to protect beneficiaries and prevent erroneous coverage denials for essential care. California lawmakers are also working to regulate health insurers' use of AI in coverage decisions, with Assemblymember Josh Becker suggesting that his bill could set a precedent for other states.
