Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, operating with other elements of the defence forces, struck Russia’s Borisoglebsk airfield in the Voronezh region early on 5 July. Kyiv’s General Staff said the raid destroyed a depot storing glide bombs, hit a combat-trainer aircraft and likely damaged or destroyed additional Su-34, Su-35S and Su-30SM fighter jets based at the facility. Satellite imagery and battlefield reports were still being assessed; Moscow had not issued a detailed comment by late Saturday.

The cross-border strike came hours after Russia launched what Ukraine called the largest drone attack of the three-year war. Ukraine’s Air Force said 322 Shahed drones and decoys were sent overnight, of which 157 were shot down and 135 were lost, probably due to electronic jamming. Governor Alexander Gusev reported more than 25 drones downed over Voronezh and a temporary power-line outage but did not mention the airfield.

Kyiv has stepped up attacks on military infrastructure inside Russia, arguing that degrading forward bases and munition stores curbs Moscow’s ability to carry out air strikes on Ukrainian cities. Last month, Ukraine claimed to destroy more than 40 Russian aircraft in similar raids. The latest exchange underscores the widening reach of Ukrainian operations even as Moscow intensifies long-range drone barrages.
