Trump’s Nominee Alexus Grynkewich Assumes NATO, EUCOM Command, Says Ukraine Can Win War Against Russia

Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich, nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and head of U.S. European Command (EUCOM), has expressed confidence that Ukraine can win the war against Russia. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Grynkewich emphasized the determination and tenacity of Ukrainians defending their homeland, a resolve difficult for others to fully comprehend without experiencing similar circumstances. Grynkewich, a former F-16 and F-22 pilot with Belarusian roots, officially assumed command of NATO's Allied Command Operations on July 4, 2025, succeeding General Christopher Cavoli, who held the position since 2022.

NATO and allied military officials have welcomed Grynkewich's appointment, highlighting the continuity and strength of transatlantic defense cooperation. Grynkewich's stance aligns with previous U.S. generals who led EUCOM and shared similar views on Ukraine's prospects in the conflict with Russia.
