U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel has agreed to the terms of a U.S.-drafted 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and called on Hamas to accept what he described as a “final proposal.” Mediators from Qatar and Egypt are expected to transmit the offer to the militant group, which Trump warned would face worsening conditions if it rejected the deal.
Trump added that his representatives—special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance—held a “long and productive” meeting in Washington with Israeli adviser Ron Dermer to finalise the plan. He will press the matter further when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits the White House on Monday, saying he hopes a ceasefire-for-hostages agreement can be reached “next week.”
Hamas has signalled willingness to free remaining hostages in exchange for an end to the war, while Israel insists any truce must lead to the group’s disarmament and dismantlement. The conflict began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel and seized 251 hostages. Gaza’s health ministry says Israel’s subsequent offensive has killed more than 56,000 Palestinians, displaced the enclave’s entire population and deepened a humanitarian crisis.
