Russia Fires Drones and 12 Ballistic Missiles at Kyiv in Overnight Assault

Russia launched one of its heaviest combined air strikes on Kyiv in months, firing 12 ballistic missiles and deploying more than a dozen explosive drones over the Ukrainian capital late on 3 July and into the early hours of 4 July, according to the Ukrainian Air Force and city officials. The air-raid alert in Kyiv lasted about seven hours as air-defence crews attempted to repel successive waves of Shahed-type drones before the missile barrage.

Debris and direct hits ignited fires in several neighbourhoods. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said a blaze broke out on the roof of a residential building in the Obolon district, while drone fragments fell near a school and apartment blocks in Dniprovskyi. A separate fire was reported at a non-residential facility in Solomianskyi. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said initial information indicated limited structural damage and no confirmed casualties, though emergency teams were still assessing the sites.

The overnight attack comes amid an intensified Russian campaign aimed at exhausting Ukraine’s air defences and undermining civilian morale. Kyiv has faced near-nightly drone raids in recent weeks, but the use of a dozen ballistic missiles marks an escalation in firepower. Ukrainian authorities urged residents to remain in shelters as they evaluated whether the latest strike signalled the start of a broader offensive.
