India launched Operation Sindoor, a coordinated military strike targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians, including one Nepali citizen. The operation, executed by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, used special precision munitions and involved assets such as Rafale and Su-30MKI fighter jets.
Targets included terror infrastructure in Bahawalpur, Muridke, Sialkot, and multiple sites in PoK. Among the destroyed camps was a facility linked to the training of Ajmal Kasab and David Headley. Indian officials reported that over 100 terrorists were killed, and HQ-9 air defence missile launchers in Pakistan suffered heavy damage. Harpy drones were used to disable Pakistani air defence systems, including those in Lahore and Sialkot.
Indian authorities emphasized that the strikes were focused, measured, and non-escalatory, with no civilian or military targets hit. The operation was named 'Operation Sindoor' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh led the official briefing, confirming nine terror camps were destroyed.
Pakistan attempted retaliatory drone and missile attacks on 15 Indian cities, including Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, and Chandigarh, but Indian air defense systems such as S-400 and Akash successfully intercepted the threats. Pakistani artillery and mortar shelling across the Line of Control (LoC) resulted in civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries in Poonch, and damage to a Gurudwara.
Flight operations were disrupted at 21 airports across northern India, and Karachi, Lahore, and Sialkot airports in Pakistan were temporarily closed. Schools were shut in border districts of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir. Nationwide blackouts and civil defense mock drills were conducted in response to the heightened security situation.
The Indian government briefed UNSC members and other international partners, reiterating its commitment to non-escalation. International organizations and foreign governments, including the United Nations, United States, European Union, and others, called for restraint and dialogue. Prime Minister Modi briefed President Droupadi Murmu on the operation.
