Israeli Strikes Kill 94 in Gaza; UN Warns of Rising Deaths Near Aid Sites

Israeli airstrikes and shootings across Gaza late Wednesday and Thursday killed 94 Palestinians, including 45 people who were trying to obtain humanitarian aid, according to hospitals and the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The dead included entire families sheltering in tent camps and a school used by displaced residents.

Medical sources said fresh attacks early Friday claimed at least 35 to 46 more lives, around half of them near aid distribution sites. Israel’s military said it was examining the reports; it has previously stated that troops fire warning shots to control crowds and denies deliberately targeting civilians.

The United Nations human rights office reports 613 people have died near humanitarian convoys or at distribution points run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation since the network began operating in late May. Amnesty International charged Israel with using starvation as a weapon of war, allegations rejected by Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

The Gaza Health Ministry puts the overall Palestinian death toll at more than 57,000 since the war erupted on 7 Oct 2023. Mediators from Egypt and Qatar are pressing Hamas to accept a proposed 60-day cease-fire that Washington says Israel has endorsed, but no final agreement has been reached.
