Israeli Strike Kills Director of Gaza’s Indonesian Hospital and Family

An Israeli airstrike on the Tel al-Hawa district of Gaza City on Wednesday killed Dr. Marwan Sultan, the director of the Indonesian Hospital, Gaza’s Ministry of Health said. Shifa Medical Complex officials added that Sultan was one of only two board-certified cardiology consultants serving the northern part of the territory.

The blast also claimed the lives of his wife and at least five of their children, bringing the immediate family death toll to seven, according to medical sources. Rescue workers said others remained trapped under the rubble of the residential building hit in the strike.

The Health Ministry condemned the attack as part of a broader pattern of strikes on medical personnel, and the militant group Hamas called the killing a “war crime.” Sultan had repeatedly appealed to international organizations for protection of Gaza’s medical facilities, many of which have been damaged or occupied during the nine-month conflict.

Across the enclave, Israeli operations killed 142 people and wounded 487 in the 24 hours to midday Wednesday, the Health Ministry said, warning that the loss of senior physicians further erodes Gaza’s already depleted health-care system.
