Hamas Gives Gaza Militia Chief 10 Days to Surrender for Treason

The Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry in Gaza on Wednesday said its Revolutionary Court has given Yasser Abu Shabab—leader of a well-armed Bedouin clan and the “Popular Forces” militia—ten days to turn himself in for trial. The grace period runs from 2 July and expires on 12 July, the ministry announced in a statement carried by local media.

Abu Shabab, 32, faces charges of treason, collaborating with hostile entities, forming an armed gang and armed rebellion. If he fails to surrender, he will be declared a fugitive and tried in absentia, and the public has been urged to disclose his whereabouts or risk prosecution for aiding his escape.

The militia operates mainly around Rafah in southern Gaza, an area that remains under Israeli military control. Hamas accuses the group of looting humanitarian aid and coordinating with Israeli forces—allegations Abu Shabab’s followers deny, saying they escort relief convoys. The order marks the most public move by Hamas to reassert authority over breakaway factions since the war in the enclave began in October 2023.
