European Union leaders signalled they are ready to increase military assistance to Kyiv after Washington paused deliveries of some categories of US weapons to Ukraine. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the bloc "must fill" any gap in supplies, adding that a model to support production of arms inside Ukraine is already functioning and could be expanded with fresh EU money.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed the call, saying the US move was "a clear signal" for Europe to intensify its own support. She pointed to the €150 billion allocated in May under the EU’s "ReArm Europe" initiative, noting that member states could channel those funds to purchase equipment for Ukraine or invest directly in the country’s defence industry. The broader plan envisages up to €800 billion in defence spending across the bloc.
Frederiksen, speaking in Copenhagen at the launch of Denmark’s six-month EU Council presidency, also raised the prospect of relocating part of Ukraine’s defence production to partner countries, including Denmark, to accelerate output. EU capitals will discuss concrete financing mechanisms and procurement timetables in the coming weeks.
