BRICS leaders meeting in Rio de Janeiro issued a joint communiqué on 6 July demanding an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and all other occupied Palestinian territories. The 11-nation bloc—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and recent entrants including Iran and Indonesia—said Gaza is an inseparable part of Palestine and backed the reunification of the West Bank and Gaza under an independent Palestinian state.

The statement voiced “serious concern” over renewed Israeli attacks, blocked aid deliveries and what it described as violations of international humanitarian law, including the use of starvation as a method of warfare. It urged all parties to engage in negotiations “in good faith” to halt the fighting, which has entered its 22nd month.

Beyond the Gaza war, the communiqué condemned recent air strikes on Iran and Syria and criticised the rise of “unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures” that disrupt global trade—language widely read as a rebuke of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 145 % duties on Chinese goods and broader tariff threats.

The summit’s call comes as Israel-Hamas cease-fire talks resume in Doha and ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned visit to the White House on Monday. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 57,418 people have been killed since the conflict began, heightening pressure on international actors to secure a truce.
