A military helicopter operated by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) crashed while attempting to land at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport on 2 July, according to Somalia’s state-run SONNA news agency. The Mi-24 aircraft, which had flown in from Balidogle airbase, erupted in flames on impact, sending thick smoke over the airport’s military section before emergency crews brought the fire under control.

The helicopter was carrying eight personnel. SONNA and aviation officials said the number of casualties had yet to be confirmed, although one security source later told local media that three people survived and five were killed. Civil aviation authorities said flight operations at the airport remained normal. An investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the crash.

AUSSOM, which fields more than 11,000 troops drawn largely from Uganda and other African Union members, supports Somali forces fighting the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab insurgency. The incident is the mission’s most serious aircraft loss in Mogadishu since the transition from ATMIS earlier this year.
