Xbox Producer Criticised After Advising Laid-Off Staff to Use AI

Xbox Game Studios Publishing executive producer Matt Turnbull drew industry backlash after advising recently laid-off Microsoft employees to turn to generative-AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for “career planning, resume help and emotional clarity.” The recommendations appeared in a LinkedIn post on 4 July that was deleted within hours.

Turnbull’s comments came days after Microsoft disclosed a fresh round of layoffs affecting up to 9,100 roles, many of them in its gaming division where multiple studios have been shuttered and projects cancelled. The cuts add to more than 6,000 jobs eliminated in May and coincide with the company’s plan to spend about $80 billion this year on AI infrastructure.

In the archived post, Turnbull listed sample prompts for job-seekers and suggested using AI to reframe feelings of impostor syndrome. Developers and former staff criticised the guidance as tone-deaf, noting that the restructuring is partly aimed at reallocating resources toward AI-driven initiatives.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of Microsoft’s strategy to expand AI adoption while reducing headcount, highlighting tensions between management’s technological ambitions and worker concerns over job security and support.
