Utah lawmakers have passed a bill to provide public financing for a potential Major League Baseball stadium in Salt Lake City's west side. The bill, which sets up state funds for the stadium, includes a major revision where sales tax generated within the district will subsidize the project. Lawmakers scrapped plans to raise the hotel tax for the stadium. The bill now awaits Governor Cox's signature. Additionally, the Senate passed a bill for a hockey arena sports district with about $1 billion in public financing to attract an NHL hockey game to Downtown SLC.
The Senate just gave final approval to the bill allowing SLC to create a 10-block "revitalization area" Downtown and levying a tax to pump roughly $1 billion into the area — in hopes of luring an NHL hockey franchise to the city. Now it goes to the governor for a signature.
