President Donald Trump has signed a far-reaching budget package, branded the “Big Beautiful Bill,” that commits roughly $170 billion to immigration enforcement over the next several years. The legislation was approved by Congress and signed into law on July 4, expanding federal resources for border security and deportation operations.
Budget tables show about $30 billion set aside to enlarge Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, $45 billion to build or expand detention centers, and nearly $50 billion for additional barriers and surveillance technology along the southern border. The measure authorizes the hiring of 10,000 new ICE agents, positioning the agency to become the nation’s largest federal law-enforcement body.
Independent analyses cited during debate project the bill will add more than $3 trillion to the national debt. To offset the new spending, the legislation cuts more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and other health programs and trims roughly $200 billion from nutrition assistance, changes Democrats say could leave millions without health coverage or food aid.
Implementing the enforcement mandate will require detention capacity for up to 116,000 people at a time as well as an expansion of immigration courts. The White House has not released a detailed rollout schedule, but Trump said the law provides “all of the funding and resources ICE needs” to execute what he described as the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.
A lot of people don’t fully appreciate the scale of what just happened with the ICE budget in the “Big Beautiful Bill,” with $170B for immigration enforcement & a $45B increase for ICE detention centers. ICE will now be the largest law enforcement agency in U.S. history. 🧵
